This week marks the 4-year anniversary of my coming home from work and finding that my husband had torn out our master shower without consulting me first!

We had been married 2 months, and he now admits it was not his best moment. Haha! This shower ended up being our first major house project, but it was the last thing we ever imagined we would be doing!

The master bathroom was the only room in the house that had been updated in the last decade. It was actually a decent room. Unbeknownst to us, however, the previous owners had botched their diy job and were hiding a gigantic leak with duct tape! Not even the inspector caught it when we were in the buying stage. It wasn’t until a few weeks after we moved in that we realized every time we used the shower, we ended up with a lake in the basement!

So, my husband began rebuilding it from the studs up.Then life happened – work, illness, travel…fast forward 8 months! (We were using our hall bath in the meantime.)

We were finally ready to tile. We borrowed a tile saw from my husband’s coworker, and hubby worked on tiling in the evenings. After 2 days, the coworker told us that he was going to need the saw back the next day. We were only half done!

Now picture this: I was 8 weeks pregnant with our first child and extremely nauseous. There we were furiously working to tile that shower, blasting 80’s rock music, and drinking Gatorade to keep ourselves going. We finished at 2AM. It took me a loooong time to be able to tolerate the smell of thinset after that!

But we finished, we bonded, and now we have those sweet and wacky memories! What fun home improvement stories do you have? Please share!
